Love Ballads of the XVIth Century
#42 of 100
1897
This book measures 8 1/2" x 5" and has
120 pages. The text body is Antiqua Old Style with the preface set in Monotype
Series #16. The book was printed in two colors on Ruisdael paper with a cloth
spine and paper over boards. Many of the books have some, if not all,
initial letters illuminated. McKenna states that there were 40 copies specially
hand illumined but this book specifies in hand writing by Elbert Hubbard that
100 copies were specially illumined. Additionally, there is an edition of 80 not
listed in McKenna. Interestingly, the edition of 80 that I have seen has virtually no
extra illumination. There is also an unlimited edition printed and bound the
same as the limited editions.
The regular edition of Love Ballads was advertised in the July 1897 Philistine
as being bound in antique
boards with a price of $2.00. Additionally it was listed again in the 1899 catalog
still selling for $2.00.
