Friendship
by Henry David Thoreau, 1903
#3 of 50
The book measures 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" and is
bound full Levant and was illustrated by Emma Johnson. Of the 50 books
printed, this is one of the 10 that were printed on Classic Vellum with hand drawn
initials and 40 freehand drawings. This book was sold on eBay in March of 2001
by a book dealer out of Cincinnati. He did not specialize in Roycroft books and
there was no reserve. The initial bidding price was, as I recall, $95.00. The
Cincinnati dealer had originally bought the book for less than $100.00 at a local
auction. I'll let you guess at the final sales price!
There is a listing for a Friendship in the 1903 catalog that states, "Ten on
Classic Vellum, specially bound in full Levant, initials drawn in free hand,
very elaborate, each $250." The 1903 catalog further states that 50 copies
were printed on Imperial Japan Vellum, initials drawn in free hand and that they
sold for $60.00
