THE ILLUSTRATORS
Scores of illuminators were employed at the Roycroft, but only a
few were considered adept; expert enough to be illustrators. They were allowed a
great deal of leeway and artistic freedom was encouraged. Significant variations
in the style of illustrations can be found in different copies of the same book.
The Deserted Village, by
Oliver Goldsmith, 1898, #26 of 470
Lawrence Mazzanovich was originally hired at W. W. Denslows' suggestion. He is
now recognized as an internationally known landscape artist. This book was an
exciting find for me and was an important addition to my collection.
