As It Seems To Me
by Elbert Hubbard, 1898
#16 of 40
This book was illustrated by W. W. Denslow, Clara Schlegel and Annie McMillan.
THE DESIGNERS
William Wallace Denslow -- His
remarkable talent, coupled with a bizarre lifestyle and sense of humor, makes
him my favorite of the Roycroft artists. In addition to the Denslow
illustration, this book also contains illustrations and illuminations by Clara
Schlegel, who collaborated with Denslow on a few books during this period.
Notice the illustrated vignette of blackberries on the initial letter (signed C.
S.) on the first page.
This book measures 9" x 5 5/8" and has 138 pages. The text body is set in Old
Style Antiqua. The book was bound in suede and illustrated/illumined by W. W.
Denslow, Clara Schlegel and Annie McMillan. #1 to 4 of this book as
were decorated entirely by W. W. Denslow. Each of these first 4 books is said to have 35
original watercolor sketches and decorated initials. McKenna noted none had been
found for confirmation, I have 2 on the website. This book is listed in the 1899 catalog and sold for $10.00
